Yangopteris ascendens (Halle) gen. et comb. nov., a climbing alethopterid pteridosperm from the Asselian (earliest Permian) Wuda Tuff Flora

Weiming Zhou et al.

Summary: The study describes new specimens of Alethopteris ascendens from the early Permian Cathaysian floras, identifying additional features and leading to the establishment of the new genus and combination Yangopteris ascendens. The appendages in Y. ascendens are interpreted as climbing devices, similar to structures in other pteridosperms. Ecological convergence is suggested between Y. ascendens and other unrelated pteridosperms in late Paleozoic peat-forming swamp ecosystems.
