Associations of CT evaluations of antigravity muscles, emphysema and airway disease with longitudinal outcomes in patients with COPD

Naoya Tanabe et al.

Summary: This longitudinal study found that in patients with COPD, a reduction in the cross-sectional area of erector spinae muscles (ESMCSA) on CT is more closely associated with mortality than with airflow limitation progression. Therefore, ESMCSA may be a better long-term mortality predictor than other CT indices such as emphysema severity and airway disease.
