A perspective on early detection systems models for COVID-19 spreading

Chiara Vianello et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the need for effective tools for predicting infection outbreaks at early stages, using model-free Early Warning Detection Systems (EWDS) techniques and publicly available data on SARS-CoV-2 spread. The adapted EWDS approaches successfully detect the onset of an epidemic and can facilitate early clustering detection to support fight strategies against emerging infectious diseases like COVID-19.

Impacts of COVID-19 on energy demand and consumption: Challenges, lessons and emerging opportunities

Peng Jiang et al.

Summary: COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant challenges to the energy industry, affecting energy demand and consumption in complex spatial and temporal ways. The additional energy consumed for COVID-19 fighting plays a crucial role in stabilizing energy demand, and there are significant regional differences in energy recovery post-pandemic. Finding and allocating energy-related emerging opportunities is a key issue to address for the future.

COVID-19: Mechanistic model calibration subject to active and varying non-pharmaceutical interventions

Mark J. Willis et al.

Summary: Mathematical models are used to understand COVID-19 transmission dynamics and the effectiveness of parameter regression methods in calibrating an epidemiological model. Chemical engineering principles are explored for application in epidemiological systems, with a focus on calibrating and validating the model. Analysis of historic data provides insights into disease suppression measures, while the response to NPIs is non-linear and future predictions are not attempted.

An epidemic model for non-first-order transmission kinetics

Eun-Young Mun et al.

Summary: Compartmental models in epidemiology typically use ordinary differential equations to describe disease spread, with the SIR scheme being a common framework. This study challenges the traditional assumption of first-order transmission rates and proposes a modified model based on mixed-order kinetics. Analysis of early-stage COVID-19 data from 127 countries supports the effectiveness of the modified model in providing realistic insights for controlling epidemics.
