Measuring the five elastic constants of a nematic liquid crystal elastomer

Seung-Won Oh et al.

Summary: The paper focuses on measuring the five independent elastic constants of a transversely isotropic liquid crystal elastomer and determining the modulus for three different nematic elastomer samples. This research is important for understanding the mechanical properties of materials and designing nanoscale transducers and actuators.

Incompressible Transversely Isotropic Hyperelastic Materials and Their Linearized Counterparts

C. O. Horgan et al.

Summary: The relationship between strain-energy density W and its derivatives for incompressible transversely isotropic hyperelastic materials is studied, discussing the conditions related to linear elastic moduli and the necessary and sufficient conditions for ensuring positive definiteness of linearized strain-energy. Fundamental constitutive inequalities are proposed, to be satisfied by any physically realistic strain-energy, particularly for models used for fiber-reinforced soft tissues.

The mathematical foundations of anelasticity: existence of smooth global intermediate configurations

Christian Goodbrake et al.

Summary: This study derives a sufficient condition for the existence of global intermediate configurations by starting from a multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient, showing that these global configurations are unique up to isometry. For radially symmetric deformations, isometric embeddings of intermediate configurations are constructed and residual stress fields are computed explicitly.

Liquid crystal elastomers wrinkling

Alain Goriely et al.

Summary: The study examines wrinkling responses in bilayer systems consisting of a monodomain liquid crystal elastomer layer and a homogeneous isotropic incompressible hyperelastic layer, with one layer being thin compared to the other. Wrinkling is caused by a combination of mechanical forces and external stimuli, and a linear stability analysis is performed to determine the conditions for the onset of wrinkling. Additionally, it is demonstrated that a plate model is applicable when the thin layer is much stiffer than the substrate.

Effect of stretching angle on the stress plateau behavior of main-chain liquid crystal elastomers

Suzuka Okamoto et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of angle theta (0) on the stress-stretch relationships of a monodomain main-chain nematic elastomer (MNE). The results show that theta (0) significantly impacts the ultimate elongation and width of the low stress plateau regime, while having minimal effect on the plateau stress. Additionally, the rotation behavior of the director in MNE varies with theta (0), with different deformation characteristics observed at different angles.
