Segmentation of the Caledonian orogenic infrastructure and exhumation of the Western Gneiss Region during transtensional collapse

J. D. Wiest et al.

Summary: The Western Gneiss Region in the Norwegian Caledonides is a typical orogenic infrastructure of a continent-continent collision zone, where new evidence for established exhumation models has been synthesized through geochronological and structural analysis. The abrupt breaks in the youngest ages of various geochronometers across different segments of the region correspond to metamorphic and structural discontinuities, suggesting the influence of lateral and vertical rheological contrasts in the orogenic edifice on the segmentation of the orogenic infrastructure.

The Sveconorwegian orogeny

Bernard Bingen et al.

Summary: This article reviews the geology and tectonic models of the Sveconorwegian orogeny, proposing an updated geodynamic scenario of a large continental collision starting at around 1065 Ma. It discusses the formation of an orogenic plateau, extensive magmatism, and metamorphic events, pointing towards a shallow asthenosphere under the crust and a retreating delamination of the dense sub-continental lithospheric mantle. The orogenic plateau eventually collapsed around 930 Ma, with extensive erosion removing overburden.

Multi-isotope tracing of the 1.3-0.9 Ga evolution of Fennoscandia; crustal growth during the Sveconorwegian orogeny

Anette Granseth et al.

Summary: This study focuses on magmatism between 1.3 and 0.9 Ga at the southwestern margin of Fennoscandia, revealing variations in isotopic compositions of the magma source regions through zircon Hf, K-feldspar Pb, and whole-rock Sr isotopic data. It suggests that the isotopic trends are likely influenced by varying proportions of isotopically evolved crust and juvenile mantle in the magma source regions, rather than the emergence of a new isotopic reservoir during the Sveconorwegian orogeny.
