Insight into acrylate copolymer dispersion with multiple interactions using large-amplitude oscillation shear

Lu Chen et al.

Summary: The rheological behavior of hydroxyethyl acrylate sodium/acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer aqueous dispersions with multiple interactions was investigated in this study. The synergistic effect of hydrogen-bonding, van der Waals and electrostatic interactions facilitated the formation of clusters, leading to an abnormal weak-strain overshoot in the shear performance. Both the overall network structure relaxation and specific cluster relaxations were essential for understanding the unique response observed.

Effects of surface heterogeneities on wetting and contact line dynamics as observed with the captive bubble technique

Zhimin Guo et al.

Summary: Understanding the effects of surface heterogeneities on wetting characteristics and contact line dynamics is crucial for various applications. This study revealed that the impact of hydrophilic defects on wetting behavior depends on area fractions and defect diameters on heterogeneous surfaces. These insights are expected to lead to advanced practical applications of heterogeneous surfaces.

Liquid-Infused Slippery Stainless Steel Surface Prepared by Alcohol-Assisted Femtosecond Laser Ablation

Yao Fang et al.

Summary: A universal method for directly constructing porous micro/nanostructures on any kind of materials to achieve LISS has been proposed. By utilizing alcohol-assisted femtosecond laser irradiation, abundant micro/nanohole structures were successfully built on stainless steel surface. The LISS demonstrated slippery properties to various liquids and showed good stability in different harsh environments, with potential applications in droplet manipulation, microfluidics, and antifouling surfaces.

Fabrication of a hydroxyapatite-PDMS microfluidic chip for bone-related cell culture and drug screening

Qiangqiang Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, a microfluidic chip using HA as a component was developed to create a highly bionic bone environment, which was found to be more conducive to cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation compared to PDMS. The chip successfully generated a concentration gradient of model drug and determined the drug's IC50, showing great potential in high-throughput bone-related drug screening and research.

Exploring Mucin as Adjunct to Phage Therapy

Amanda Carroll-Portillo et al.

Summary: Conventional phage therapy may not be effective in treating complex dysbiotic GI disorders, such as SIBO, UC, or CD, which involve shifts in multiple populations of bacteria within the microbiome. Alternative approaches, like fecal virome transfer or phage cocktails targeting multiple bacterial species, may be needed in these cases. Manipulation of the GI microenvironment and considering the role of mucin in facilitating bacteria-phage interactions could enhance the effectiveness of phage therapy for gastrointestinal dysbiosis.

Friction measurements of model saliva-wine solutions between polydimethylsiloxane surfaces

Ryan S. Edmonds et al.

Summary: This study investigated the friction between model saliva and wine mixtures to understand astringency perception in red wines. The results showed that higher tannin concentrations led to increased friction, which was directly related to the amount of saliva-wine complexes confined between sliding surfaces. This demonstrates the role of tannin/proline-rich protein complexes in reducing lubricity and increasing friction, potentially correlating with astringency perception.
