Evaluation of Mechanical and Water Absorption Behavior of Natural Fiber-Reinforced Hybrid Biocomposites

S. Sekar et al.

Summary: Hybrid composites offer higher performances and improved mechanical properties compared to polymer composites. This study investigated the mechanical properties of Phenol-Formaldehyde (PF) hybrid biocomposites reinforced with randomly oriented Calotropis gigantea Fiber (CGFs) and Palmyra fiber (PFs), including tensile, flexural, and impact properties. The results showed that adding Palmyra fiber improved the mechanical properties of the hybrid composite, especially at higher fiber volume percentages. Variation in fiber length also had a significant effect on the mechanical properties. Additionally, the water absorption of the composites increased with the increase in fiber volume percentage, reaching equilibrium after 120 hours. Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) images were used to examine the failure mechanism of the composites during mechanical testing.

Influence of Stacking Sequence on the Mechanical and Water Absorption Characteristics of Areca Sheath-palm Leaf Sheath Fibers Reinforced Epoxy Composites

Saikrishnan Ganesh et al.

Summary: This study developed four different tri-layer composites by varying the stacking sequence of areca sheath and palm leaf sheath fibers with epoxy as a matrix. The mechanical properties and water absorption of the composites were evaluated. The results showed that the composites with skin layers of areca sheath and a core layer of palm leaf sheath fibers exhibited favorable mechanical properties and reduced water absorption.

Physical and Mechanical Behavior of Hemp and Nettle Fiber-Reinforced Polyester Resin-based Hybrid Composites

Lalta Prasad et al.

Summary: This study proposes different types of composites using natural fibers and investigates their physical and mechanical behavior by varying proportions and using a hybrid composite of (hemp + nettle) fiber-reinforced polyester resin. The physical properties are determined through morphological analysis, while the mechanical properties and fractured surfaces are analyzed through hardness, tensile, flexural, impact-resistance tests, and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that the composite composition leads to high mechanical properties, suggesting its potential in replacing conventional natural fibers in various applications.

Vibration and Wear Characteristics of Aloevera/Flax/Hemp Woven Fiber Epoxy Composite Reinforced with Wire Mesh and BaSO4

Prabu Krishnasamy et al.

Summary: This article presents an experimental investigation on the mechanical, vibration, and wear behavior of a laminated composite made of (aloevera/flax/hemp/wire mesh/BaSO4). The results showed that the addition of wire mesh and BaSO4 filler improved the tensile strength and flexural strength of the composite. The addition of BaSO4 also enhanced the hardness and natural frequency of the composites. Among the different composites, the one with wire mesh and BaSO4 showed the highest coefficient of friction during the experiments.

Summary: Hybrid nanofillers loading has been used to fabricate multifunctional composites, with silica and cobalt ferrite nanoparticles combined to form a new hybrid composite structure in this study. The resulting hybrid nanocomposites showed improved mechanical properties compared to individually loaded nanoparticles or pristine composite materials. The SEM images revealed good fiber/matrix interfacial bonding in the hybrid composite.

Influence of pineapple leaf particulate on mechanical, thermal and biodegradation characteristics of pineapple leaf fiber reinforced polymer composite

Abir Saha et al.

Summary: Researchers are focusing on natural fibers for their environmental benefits, with this experimental study investigating the thermo-mechanical properties of agro-waste pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) reinforced polymer composite with pineapple micro-particles. By adding chemically treated particulates, better interfacial bonding between fibers and matrix was achieved, leading to improved mechanical and thermal properties. The study showed that 7.5% particulate inclusion had the highest tensile, flexural, compressive, and hardness properties, while 2.5% inclusion had the highest impact strength, with enhanced water absorption and biodegradability.

Summary: The research focused on developing a sandwich structure with a hybrid composite facesheet to investigate its mechanical properties, which showed improved performance by increasing the glass fiber ratio in the hybrid composites. The hybrid composite sandwich structure also achieved similar flexural stiffness with only a 6% higher thickness than the nonhybrid glass composite structure in the outer layer.
