Antiviral Activity of Reagents in Mouth Rinses against SARS-CoV-2

F. Carrouel et al.

Summary: The oral cavity is believed to play an important role in the pathogenicity and transmission of SARS-CoV-2, and the identification of targeted antiviral mouth rinses is crucial for reducing the COVID-19 pandemic. While no significant clinical studies have been conducted yet, examining commercial mouth rinses for reagents with specific antiviral properties against SARS-CoV-2 is important. Targeting the outer lipid membrane of the enveloped virus and denaturing proteins in the capsid are potential strategies for controlling the viral load in the oral cavity.

Identification of antiviral antihistamines for COVID-19 repurposing

Leah R. Reznikov et al.

Summary: The urgency to identify therapies that prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection and enhance COVID-19 outcomes is emphasized. The study identified potential repurposed antihistamine drugs with in vitro antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 through mining electronic health records. Clinical studies are recommended to evaluate the effectiveness of these antihistamines for disease prevention and treatment.

Surfactants - Compounds for inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 and other enveloped viruses

Miriam Simon et al.

Summary: The article provides a general overview of the interactions between surfactants and viruses, particularly focusing on how to control these interactions to inhibit the infectivity of enveloped viruses, including coronaviruses. Various types of interactions act on different components of a virus. By designing tailor-made surfactants, it is expected to achieve more effective utilization of surfactants in combating viruses.

SARS-CoV-2 D614G spike mutation increases entry efficiency with enhanced ACE2-binding affinity

Seiya Ozono et al.

Summary: The naturally occurring mutations of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein can affect cell entry, with the D614G mutation resulting in increased cell entry and maintaining susceptibility to neutralization by antisera against prototypic viruses. Further global surveillance is needed to understand the transmissibility of SARS-CoV-2 among humans.

Insights into SARS-CoV-2 evolution, potential antivirals, and vaccines

Ahmed S. Abdel-Moneim et al.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2, a novel coronavirus, has caused over 100 million laboratory-confirmed cases worldwide. The virus is similar to a coronavirus from horseshoe bats and likely originated from spillover from bats or other wild animals to humans. Current data indicate that reinfection with SARS-CoV-2 is related to neutralizing antibodies levels, and there are sustained memory responses following infection. Vaccines and antivirals like remdesivir are being used to combat the virus, but evaluation against emerging variants is necessary.
