Possibility of Bridge Inspection through Drive-By Vehicles

Mijia Yang et al.

Summary: Based on virtual simulations of vehicle-bridge interactions, this study tested the possibility of detecting stiffness reduction damages in bridges through vehicle responses in both 2D and 3D settings. Short-Time Fourier Transformation (STFT) processing of vehicle acceleration data showed strong correlation between energy band variation and damage parameters, highlighting the importance of initial entering conditions for accurate vehicle responses in the interaction models. Additionally, the study determined the offset distance required for vehicle-bridge interaction modeling under different road profile roughness levels, presenting a new integrated method for drive-by bridge inspection.

A Climbing Robot for Steel Bridge Inspection

Son Thanh Nguyen et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new adaptable tank-like robot design for climbing on steel structures to collect data and perform inspections. The robot is able to climb on different steel structural shapes by using reciprocating mechanism and magnetic roller-chains. It has been rigorously tested and proven to be stable and reliable, integrating multiple sensors for comprehensive data collection.
