The importance of intraspecific trait variability in promoting functional niche dimensionality

Dong He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of trait integration and soil fertility on species richness and trait diversity in woody communities in subtropical Chinese forests. The results showed that intraspecific trait variability plays a crucial role in promoting biodiversity, while less fertile sites had stronger trait integration, leading to decreased taxonomic and functional diversity. The negative association between trait integration and species richness was stronger when considering intraspecific variation, suggesting that intraspecific trait variability can impact species distribution and occurrence.

Phylogenetic regionalization of tree assemblages reveals novel patterns of evolutionary affinities in the Atlantic Forest

Vanessa Leite Rezende et al.

Summary: Using a phylogenetic approach, the study divided woody plant assemblages in the Atlantic Forest into seven principal evolutionary lineage groups. The most significant turnover in lineage composition was observed between tropical evergreen rain forests and subtropical/highland assemblages, with the mixed subtropical forests showing the lowest compositional similarity values. The tropical rain forest exhibited the highest number of indicator lineages and indicator statistic values.
