Arsenic behavior across soil-water interfaces in paddy soils: Coupling, decoupling and speciation

Zhao-Feng Yuan et al.

Summary: The sharp redox gradient at soil-water interfaces is crucial in controlling the translocation and transformation of arsenic in paddy soils. This study found a strong positive linear relationship between dissolved Fe, Mn, As, and P in most paddy soils, indicating their general coupling, although decoupling was observed in one soil. The study provides direct evidence of multi-elements' interaction along redox gradient of SWI in paddy soils.

Arsenic speciation and elemental composition of rice samples from the Slovenian market

Zdenka Slejkovec et al.

Summary: Total arsenic concentration was highest in brown and parboiled rice, and lowest in basmati rice. Dimethylarsinic acid and monomethylarsonic acid accounted for over 50% of total arsenic in some cases. Total arsenic concentration in rice may be a better health hazard indicator than inorganic arsenic concentration.

Simultaneous measurement of aqueous redox-sensitive elements and their species across the soil-water interface

Zhao-Feng Yuan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the mapping of mm-scale element profiles across the soil-water interface in paddy soils using an optimized ICP-MS method and a HR porewater sampler. High concentrations of iron and manganese were measured with ICP-MS, while arsenic, phosphorus, and sulfur species were separated by ion chromatography-ICP-MS. The technique developed in this study will significantly promote the measurement throughput in limited samples collected by HR samplers, facilitating redox-sensitive elements biogeochemical cycling in saturated soils.

Periphyton enhances arsenic release and methylation at the soil-water interface of paddy soils

Ting Guo et al.

Summary: Periphyton plays a significant role in the mobility and transformation of arsenic in paddy soils, enhancing the release of arsenic to water and increasing methylated arsenic content at the soil-water interface. Additionally, periphyton contributes to detoxification processes of arsenic, indicating its importance in the biogeochemistry of arsenic in rice paddy fields.
