New Italian directional and intensity archaeomagnetic reference curves for the past 3000 years: Insights on secular variation and implications on dating

E. Tema et al.

Summary: This study presents the first Italian reference secular variation curves for both direction and intensity over the past 3000 years, applying strict selection criteria including archaeomagnetic records and Bayesian statistics. The new curves depict interesting geomagnetic field features and can serve as reference curves for archaeomagnetic dating.

Analyzing the geomagnetic axial dipole field moment over the historical period from new archeointensity results at Bukhara (Uzbekistan, Central Asia)

Marie Troyano et al.

Summary: Direct measurements of Earth's magnetic field intensity and direction have been available since the mid-19th century, allowing accurate determination of its variations. This study focuses on archeomagnetic intensity data from baked clay bricks in Central Asia to analyze the axial dipole behavior during the late 18th century, showing a relative minimum in dipole magnitude. The reliability of the gufm1 model is crucial for interpretation, as the axial dipole evolution appears non-linear.

Archeomagnetic intensity variations during the era of geomagnetic spikes in the Levant

Philip W. Livermore et al.

Summary: Archeomagnetic analyses in the Near-East during the first millennium BCE reveal six spikes in intensity variation lasting between 30 and 100 years, with a high dependency on specific treatments of data at the fragment level. Increasing the error budget results in a spikeless model that closely resembles the SHAWQ-Iron Age global model.

Refining geomagnetic field intensity changes in Europe between 200 CE and 1800 CE. New data from the Mediterranean region

M. Rivero-Montero et al.

Summary: Recent archeointensity data from the Mediterranean region provide insights into geomagnetic field intensity changes in Europe over the past two millennia, identifying relative intensity maxima in the 14th to 15th centuries. Two new paleosecular variation curves suggest intensity maxima occur approximately every 300 years, with a mean lag-time of about 100 years between Western and Eastern Europe.

How did the dipole axis vary during the first millennium BCE? New data from West Europe and analysis of the directional global database

Gwenael Herve et al.

Summary: This study presents new directional and intensity data from archaeological sites in South Italy and France between the 13th and the 4th centuries BCE. The data confirms high geomagnetic field strength, significant deviation from a Geocentric Axial Dipole field, and rapid secular variation during this period in Europe. It also highlights a notable difference of about 25 degrees in the longitudes of virtual geomagnetic poles between European and Middle Eastern data, possibly related to the Levantine Iron Age anomaly.

Archeomagnetic intensity investigations of French medieval ceramic workshops: Contribution to regional field modeling and archeointensity-based dating

A. Genevey et al.

Summary: This study obtained seven new archeointensity data by analyzing pottery and kiln fragments from ceramic workshops in France dated from the High Middle Ages. These new data support the existence of an intensity minimum around the transition between the 7th and 8th century, consistent with previous findings in France and Northern Italy. The study also generated new regional mean intensity variation curves based on two independent modeling approaches, providing a basis for further research on Medieval pottery.
