Stability of generalized Kolmogorov flow in a channel

Francesco Romano

Summary: This study generalized the Kolmogorov flow using a generic forcing term and performed linear stability analysis on power-law profiles with different exponents. Critical conditions for wall-bounded flows were compared in terms of critical Reynolds number, critical wavelength, and eigenspectrum at criticality. The most dangerous perturbations were characterized, revealing three qualitatively different most dangerous modes depending on various factors.

Suppression of turbulence and travelling waves in a vertical heated pipe

Elena Marensi et al.

Summary: Buoyancy forces can suppress turbulence in fluid flow through a pipe, leading to severe heat transfer deterioration, which is undesirable in both heating and cooling applications. In vertical flow, axial buoyancy forces help drive the flow. Our research shows that buoyancy can suppress the convection driven state, transitioning the flow from turbulence to a relatively quiescent state.
