Sex-chromosome evolution in frogs: what role for sex-antagonistic genes?

Nicolas Perrin

Summary: Studies on two families of amphibians, Ranidae and Hylidae, show that sex-antagonistic (SA) genes do not play a significant role in the evolutionary dynamics of their sex chromosomes. Instead, neutral processes and deleterious mutations are found to be more central in driving the evolution of sex chromosomes in these groups.

Evolution of master sex determiners: TGF-β signalling pathways at regulatory crossroads

Qiaowei Pan et al.

Summary: More than 20 vertebrate master sex-determining genes have been identified on different sex chromosomes of mammals, birds, frogs and fish, with some belonging to the TGF-beta signalling pathway. This pathway, despite being a subordinate member of the sex-regulatory network in mammals, has repeatedly become a top regulator, challenging current evolutionary concepts on sex-determining mechanisms.

A 180 Myr-old female-specific genome region in sturgeon reveals the oldest known vertebrate sex determining system with undifferentiated sex chromosomes

Heiner Kuhl et al.

Summary: A female-specific sequence has been discovered in Russian sturgeon, which has been conserved for 180 million years of sturgeon evolution. PCR genotyping tests revealed female-specific products in six species, including the most divergent extant lineages.

A neutral model for the loss of recombination on sex chromosomes

Daniel L. Jeffries et al.

Summary: The loss of recombination on sex chromosomes may be due to the neutral accumulation of sequence divergence adjacent to the sex determiner. This phenomenon shows certain patterns in natural systems and is influenced by the pre-existing recombination landscape of the genome and sex differences in recombination rates.
