Exploring systematic biases, rooting methods and morphological evidence to unravel the evolutionary history of the genus Ficus (Moraceae)

Jean-Yves Rasplus et al.

Summary: Utilizing a new approach, the study revealed new insights into the phylogeny of 70 species of Ficus, showcasing discrepancies between morphological and molecular data and the challenges of homogenizing evolutionary rates and GC content for phylogenetic inference. The root of the molecular tree remains ambiguous, with section Pharmacosycea's placement considered a result of long-branch attraction artefact. Despite the morphological plasticity, the study advocates for restoring a central role to morphology in understanding the evolution of Ficus.

Not so stressful after all: Epiphytic individuals of accidental epiphytes experience more favourable abiotic conditions than terrestrial conspecifics

Vincent Hoeber et al.

Summary: Vascular epiphytes can grow in tree crowns at suitable microhabitats, showing better growth conditions with higher nutrient concentrations, higher specific leaf area, and lower leaf dry matter content. The availability of old and structurally diverse trees is crucial for vascular epiphytism in the study area, suggesting the importance of preserving such trees in secondary forest ecosystems.
