Impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 Public Health Measures on Detections of Influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus in Children During the 2020 Australian Winter

Daniel K. Yeoh et al.

Summary: Public health measures aimed at COVID-19 have led to significant reductions in respiratory syncytial virus and influenza detections among children in Western Australia during winter 2020, despite schools reopening. Border closures are likely playing a key role in limiting external introductions of respiratory viruses.

Kawasaki Disease and Kawasaki Disease Shock Syndrome Hospitalization Rates in the United States, 2006-2018

Ryan A. Maddox et al.

Summary: Analysis of large national databases showed consistent KD-related hospitalization rates with no noticeable increase over time, but the percentage of KD hospitalizations with potential KDSS increased. Continued national surveillance is crucial to detect potential changes in disease epidemiology.

Assessment of 135 794 Pediatric Patients Tested for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Across the United States

L. Charles Bailey et al.

Summary: This cohort study of US pediatric patients found low rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection, with mild clinical manifestations. Infection was associated with Black, Hispanic, and Asian race/ethnicity, adolescence and young adulthood, as well as non-respiratory chronic medical conditions. The study suggests higher concern may be warranted for patients with complex medical conditions or minority race/ethnicity.

Trends in US Pediatric Hospital Admissions in 2020 Compared With the Decade Before the COVID-19 Pandemic

Jonathan H. Pelletier et al.

Summary: This study analyzed pediatric admissions in 49 US hospitals and found a decrease in pediatric admissions across a range of diseases in 2020. While some conditions may have decreased in incidence during the COVID-19 pandemic, it also suggests unmet pediatric care needs.

The COVID-19 Pandemic and Changes in Healthcare Utilization for Pediatric Respiratory and Nonrespiratory Illnesses in the United States

James W. Antoon et al.

Summary: The study found that during the COVID-19 pandemic, pediatric encounters for respiratory diseases decreased significantly while reductions for nonrespiratory diseases were more modest and varied by age. Encounters for respiratory diseases among adolescents declined less and returned to previous levels faster compared to younger children. Further research is needed to determine the contributions of decreased illness and changes in care-seeking behavior to this observed reduction.

Kawasaki Disease Shock Syndrome in Japan and Comparison With Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children in European countries

Junko Suzuki et al.

Summary: KDSS showed overlap with MIS-C but had different clinical features such as higher incidence of CAAs and requirement for cardiovascular agents. Both KDSS and MIS-C had good prognosis with low mortality rates.

Assessment of Pediatric Admissions for Kawasaki Disease or Infectious Disease During the COVID-19 State of Emergency in Japan

Takuya Hara et al.

Summary: This study found that the incidence of KD significantly increased compared to respiratory tract and gastrointestinal infections during the COVID-19 state of emergency, suggesting that contact or droplet transmission is not a major route for KD development and that KD may be associated with airborne infections in most cases.
