Constitutive relations and adiabatic invariants for electromagnetic waves in a dynamic Lorentz medium

M. Bakunov et al.

Summary: This study derived constitutive relations for Lorentz media with a time-varying density and intrinsic frequency of oscillators, and obtained adiabatic invariants for electromagnetic waves in dynamic Lorentz media. If the oscillator density varies, the invariants differ from those for nondispersive dielectrics and plasmas, predicting a frequency shift accompanied by a decrease in wave energy. If the intrinsic frequency varies, the invariants coincide with those for nondispersive dielectrics, predicting wave amplification and attenuation with increasing and decreasing frequency, respectively. Additionally, it was shown that a medium with a decreasing density of oscillating dipoles cannot be described by a time-varying dielectric permittivity even in the nondispersive limit.

Electromagnetic wave transformation in an oscillator medium with growing density

A. Maslov et al.

Summary: This study examines the transformation of an electromagnetic wave in a medium with rapidly growing oscillator density, showing that the initial polariton can be converted into new polariton modes and oscillations of existing and created oscillators. These oscillations, while producing zero net polarization, consume a significant amount of energy from the initial polariton. The integration of material equations is necessary to describe the polarization oscillations as they are uncoupled from the fields.
