A cellular handbook for collided ribosomes: surveillance pathways and collision types

Sezen Meydan et al.

Summary: Ribosomes slow down or stall when encountering obstacles on mRNAs, potentially leading to them colliding and forming complexes. Recent studies have shown that such collisions are common on endogenous mRNAs in eukaryotic cells, and the response to them by surveillance pathways depends on the context and duration of ribosome stalling.

Failure to Degrade CAT-Tailed Proteins Disrupts Neuronal Morphogenesis and Cell Survival

Tsuyoshi Udagawa et al.

Summary: Ribosome-associated quality control modifies nascent polypeptide chains, promoting their degradation, which is essential for proper neuronal morphogenesis and cell survival. However, the mechanism and cytotoxicity of the C-terminal CAT tail in mammals remain unclear.

Convergence of mammalian RQC and C-end rule proteolytic pathways via alanine tailing

Anna Thrun et al.

Summary: This study reveals the mechanism of RQC-mediated proteolytic targeting of ribosome stalling products in mammalian cells, showing that NEMF has an additional Listerin-independent role and identifying CRL2(KLHDC10) E3 ligase complex and Pirh2/Rchy1 as key components in this pathway. These findings suggest that functionally redundant E3s may play a role in neurodegeneration mechanisms, similar to the impact of Listerin mutation in mice.
