Deciphering Vaccines for COVID-19: where do we stand today?

Tushar Baviskar et al.

Summary: COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has impacted over 200 nations globally. Efforts are being made worldwide to develop vaccines to combat the rapid transmission of this virus.

Genomic evidence for reinfection with SARS-CoV-2: a case study

Richard L. Tillett et al.

Summary: A man was infected with SARS-CoV-2 twice with genetically different virus variants, the second infection being more severe. The study suggests that previous exposure to SARS-CoV-2 may not guarantee immunity, and all individuals should take precautions to avoid infection. This has implications for vaccine development and application.

Spike mutation D614G alters SARS-CoV-2 fitness

Jessica A. Plante et al.

Summary: The D614G substitution in the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein enhances viral replication and infectivity in human lung epithelial cells, primary airway tissues, and hamsters. This variant may increase transmission in the upper respiratory tract and doesn't seem to significantly reduce vaccine efficacy. Further research on therapeutic antibodies targeting the circulating G614 virus is recommended.

Development of the reproduction number from coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 case data in Germany and implications for political measures

Sahamoddin Khailaie et al.

Summary: A compartmental infection dynamics model was used to estimate the time-varying reproduction number of viral spreading in Germany and its federal states, showing that the implementation of non-pharmaceutical interventions can reduce the reproduction number, but partial release of interventions may lead to increases. Real-time monitoring of transmission dynamics is crucial for evaluating the outbreak extent, short-term projections for the healthcare system burden, and the response to policy changes.

Modelling of reproduction number for COVID-19 in India and high incidence

S. Marimuthu et al.

Summary: Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in China, forecasting the epidemic using epidemiological models has been crucial. This study estimated the effective reproduction number (R) for COVID-19 over time in India using government-reported case numbers. The study found that the basic reproduction number (R-0) for India was 1.379, showing a stabilization of the transmission rate from the first week of April.
