The biomes of Western Australia: a vegetation-based approach using the zonality/ azonality conceptual framework

Paul D. Macintyre et al.

Summary: Vegetation patterns are influenced by environmental drivers operating at different scales, forming large functional entities known as biomes. Traditional biome recognition is based on physiognomic traits reflecting selective filters such as climate or disturbance, but it may oversimplify biome patterns by not considering other drivers. Predictive modelling based on vegetation maps can effectively define robust biome patterns, aligning well with existing biogeographic classifications but with some residual climatic discordance.

Water 'on the rocks': a summer drink for thirsty trees?

Andrea Nardini et al.

Summary: The study shows that different bedrock characteristics can affect tree water status and drought resistance, leading to landscape-level heterogeneity in the impact of drought on tree water status and dieback.

A new rheophytic species of Syzygium (Myrtaceae) from the lower Kunene River of Angola and Namibia

Wessel Swanepoel et al.

Summary: Syzygium kuneneense, a new species found only in the northern part of the Namib Desert in the Kaokoveld Centre of Endemism, southwestern Angola and adjacent northwestern Namibia, grows among rocks on the floodplain and banks of the lower Kunene River. Its diagnostic features include oblanceolate or narrowly elliptic leaves, dense flower heads and pedicellate flowers. Conservation assessment recommends the new species be classified as Vulnerable (VU D1) based on IUCN Red List categories and criteria.
