The wildland fire system and challenges for engineering

Mark A. Finney

Summary: The recent wildland fire disasters have sparked interest from various disciplines aiming to lessen the impact of fires on people and natural resources. This paper examines the modern wildland fire system, primarily in the US, and discusses the contributions from the architecture, insurance, city and county government, and engineering sectors towards mitigating or avoiding damage during these fires. The historical context and human culture surrounding wildland fires are also discussed to understand how innovations and engineering technologies can impact the wildfire system.
