Structure and function of virion RNA polymerase of a crAss-like phage

Arina V. Drobysheva et al.

Summary: The RNA polymerase from the crAss-like bacteriophage phi14:2, which is structurally similar to eukaryotic RNA interference polymerases, is translocated into the host cell along with phage DNA to transcribe early phage genes. The genomes of all crAss-like phages encode a large virion-packaged protein with a catalytic sequence motif, suggesting a potential phage origin for eukaryotic RNA interference polymerases.
