Color Toning of Mie Resonant Silicon Nanoparticle Color Inks

Takuma Okazaki et al.

Summary: A Monte Carlo simulation was developed to predict the reflection color of silicon nanoparticle inks, demonstrating a strong dependence on concentration. To expand the controllable range of hue, saturation, and brightness of the inks, a mixture ink with light-absorbing carbon black nanoparticles was developed, allowing for vivid reflection colors under room light.

Angle-, Polarization-, and Wavelength-Resolved Light Scattering of Single Mie Resonators Using Fourier-Plane Spectroscopy

Tatsuki Hinamoto et al.

Summary: Interference between multipole modes of Mie resonance allows for tailoring the radiation pattern of subwavelength optical resonators, while unidirectional scattering from constructive and destructive interferences enables the design of various metasurfaces. To overcome the limitation of traditional optical microscopes in angular analysis, an angle-, polarization-, and wavelength-resolved microscopy setup has been developed to measure radiation patterns of individual nanoobjects, showing selective measurement of Mie scattering from electric and magnetic dipoles of a single silicon nanosphere.

Directional Modulation of Exciton Emission Using Single Dielectric Nanospheres

Jie Fang et al.

Summary: Coupling emitters with nanoresonators is an effective strategy for controlling light emission at the subwavelength scale. This study explores the use of individual subwavelength Si nanospheres to modulate the directional excitation and exciton emission of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides. The research demonstrates versatile light emission control for different emitters and excitation wavelengths, with the potential for multifunctional integrated photonics.

Mechano-tunable chiral metasurfaces via colloidal assembly

Patrick T. Probst et al.

Summary: This study introduces a scalable bottom-up approach to construct cross-stacked nanoparticle chain arrays with a circular dichroism of up to 11 degrees, showing enhanced sensitivity to chiral analytes. The research demonstrates full control over circular dichroism characteristics and opens up a new pathway towards actively controlled pixel arrays through strain-induced reconfiguration. Stacked elastomeric arrays containing plasmonic nanoparticles exhibit efficient chiral responses that can be fully controlled by mechanical compression and stack rotation, showcasing potential as useful modulators for photonic applications.

Plasmon Launching and Scattering by Silicon Nanoparticles

Artyom Assadillayev et al.

Summary: Resonant optical nanomaterials, such as silicon, can manipulate highly confined guided waves in the form of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on a subwavelength scale. It has been demonstrated that SPPs in ultrathin metal films can be efficiently launched due to the strong coupling between the Mie resonances of the nanoparticle and the SPP modes. By varying the particle size, the SPP excitation wavelength can be tuned across the entire near-infrared spectrum. Our results suggest that silicon nanoparticles may serve as scatterers of the SPPs supported by the film, paving the way for using high-refractive-index dielectric nanoantennas as compact elements for manipulating highly confined SPPs.

Magnetic Purcell Enhancement by Magnetic Quadrupole Resonance of Dielectric Nanosphere Antenna

Hiroshi Sugimoto et al.

Summary: A composite system consisting of Si nanosphere decorated with Eu3+ complexes is developed to efficiently couple the magnetic dipole emission of Eu3+ to the magnetic Mie modes of the nanosphere. By tuning the magnetic quadrupole Mie resonance, the branching ratio between the magnetic and electric dipole transitions can be enhanced up to 7x. The magnetic Purcell enhancement is also demonstrated in an ensemble of Si nanospheres with size distribution.
