Crust structure and thermal evolution of neutron stars in soft X-ray transients

A. Y. Potekhin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal evolution of neutron stars in soft X-ray transients by simulating different assumptions regarding crust composition and heat source distribution. It is found that the non-accreted part of the inner crust may have a layered structure, affecting the thermal evolution of transients, and the distribution of impurities in the crust strongly depends on models of dense matter and crust formation scenarios.

UV and X-ray observations of the neutron star LMXB EXO 0748-676 in its quiescent state

A. S. Parikh et al.

Summary: Researchers studying the ultraviolet and X-ray data of EXO 0748-676 during quiescence have found that the UV and X-ray emissions of this source may have different origins, with thermal emission from the neutron star's crust-cooling possibly dominating the observed X-ray flux evolution.

Heat release in accreting neutron stars

M. E. Gusakov et al.

Summary: Thermal emission from accreting neutron stars in a quiescent state is believed to be powered by nonequilibrium nuclear reactions heating the stellar crust. A universal formula for the heating efficiency is derived assuming a fully accreted crust, with the heat release parameterized by the pressure at the outer-inner crust interface. The heat release is expected to be reduced by a factor of few compared to previous works.

Summary: The study utilized a set of unified relativistic mean-field equations of state to investigate the thermal evolution of nonmagnetized and nonrotating spherically-symmetric isolated and accreting neutron stars, and found that different equations of state and proton superfluidity properties can impact the results.
