A machine learning approach to galaxy properties: joint redshift-stellar mass probability distributions with Random Forest

S. Mucesh et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the use of Random Forest machine learning algorithm to accurately predict joint redshift-stellar mass probability distribution functions, even with limited photometric bands available. The models built using DES and COSMOS2015 data outperform template-fitting methods and show high efficiency in computation speed. The development of GALPRO(1) provides researchers with a fast and intuitive tool to generate multivariate PDFs in cosmology and galaxy evolution studies.

The clustering of DESI-like luminous red galaxies using photometric redshifts

Rongpu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study presents measurements of redshift-dependent clustering of a luminous red galaxy (LRG) sample selected from the Legacy Survey imaging data set, and fits the clustering signal using the halo occupation distribution (HOD) framework. The HOD parameters are found to show little evolution except at the highest redshifts. New photometric redshift estimates and a new algorithm for dividing irregular survey geometries are developed, as well as a technique for finding best-fitting parameters in Markov chain Monte Carlo fitting. The study also releases a catalog of accurate photometric redshifts for objects with z < 21 over more than 16,000 deg(2) of sky.

Extensions to models of the galaxy-halo connection

Boryana Hadzhiyska et al.

Summary: The study explores the empirical models of subhalo abundance matching and halo occupation distribution for the galaxy-halo connection, comparing them with hydrodynamical simulation IllustrisTNG. Results indicate that both models, in their simplest forms, fail to accurately reproduce the clustering measured in the simulation. Further analysis reveals discrepancies in the predictions of high-mass, blue, star-forming galaxies compared to low-mass, red, quiescent galaxies.

Dissecting and modelling galaxy assembly bias

Xiaoju Xu et al.

Summary: Understanding the contribution of secondary halo properties to galaxy assembly bias is crucial for contemporary models of galaxy clustering. Factors such as smoothed matter density and tidal anisotropy play a significant role in galaxy clustering signal, suggesting the importance of considering these properties in theoretical modeling and detection efforts in the Universe.

Evidence for galaxy assembly bias in BOSS CMASS redshift-space galaxy correlation function

Sihan Yuan et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found that including both concentration-based and environment-based assembly bias terms can better explain galaxy clustering phenomena. By using this model, a better fit to the data is achieved, while also highlighting the constraining power of the redshift-space 2PCF.

A flexible modelling of galaxy assembly bias

S. Contreras et al.

Summary: The research team used various simulations and techniques to study the diversity of galaxy assembly bias predictions, finding that all models predict varying levels of assembly bias signal with different magnitudes, redshift evolution, and dependence on selection criteria and number density. They proposed an extension to a standard technique to include arbitrary amounts of assembly bias, which successfully reproduced the observed galaxy assembly bias signal in simulations for all redshifts and galaxy number densities.

Hybrid analytic and machine-learned baryonic property insertion into galactic dark matter haloes

Ben Moews et al.

Summary: The study explores the merging of an equilibrium model with a machine learning framework to create a high-speed hydrodynamic simulation emulator, which can populate galactic dark matter haloes with baryonic properties in cosmological simulations. The results demonstrate that this hybrid system enables the fast completion of dark matter information while discussing the advantages and disadvantages of hybrid versus machine learning-only frameworks.
