The changing circumgalactic medium over the last 10 Gyr - I. Physical and dynamical properties

Ezra Huscher et al.

Summary: The analysis of EAGLE zoom simulations shows significant changes in the physical and dynamical states of galaxy haloes over the last 10 billion years. At high redshift, the CGM is evenly divided between cool and hot phases, whereas at low redshift the hot phase contains more mass. Metals are distributed evenly in the high-z CGM, while they are dominated by cool metals in the low-z CGM. Rotationally supported structures are observed in the low-z cool CGM, while the low-z hot CGM exhibits greater angular momentum.

Cosmic ray driven outflows to Mpc scales from L* galaxies

Philip F. Hopkins et al.

Summary: The presence of cosmic rays can dominate and balance gravity in massive, low-redshift haloes, leading to cooler circumgalactic medium. With cosmic rays injected, galactic outflows are able to escape and form outflows in the intergalactic medium, altering the outflow morphology.

The evolution of the low-density HI intergalactic medium from z=3.6 to 0: data, transmitted flux, and HI column density

T-S Kim et al.

Summary: A uniform analysis of the HI transmitted flux and Hi column density distribution in the low-density IGM as a function of redshift was conducted using spectra from different instruments. The evolution from higher to lower redshifts and the stability at z < 0.5 were observed, with significant variations along different sightlines. The shape of the column density distribution function at lower redshifts can be replicated by rotating a higher redshift distribution slightly, and there is an evolutionary break in absorption line number at z around 1.5. High-N-HI absorbers evolve more rapidly than low-N-HI absorbers, possibly due to stronger clustering at lower redshifts.

Circumgalactic Mg ii Emission from an Isotropic Starburst Galaxy Outflow Mapped by KCWI

Joseph N. Burchett et al.

Summary: The study utilized the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI) to conduct spatially resolved spectroscopy of a star-forming galaxy at z = 0.6942, revealing emission from the Mg ii doublet. Through 3D radiative transfer modeling, the geometry, velocity, and density profiles of the outflowing gas were inferred.

A complete census of circumgalactic Mg II at redshift z ≲ 0.5

Yun-Hsin Huang et al.

Summary: The study found that Mgii absorbing gas exhibits distinct behaviors in isolated, star-forming, and non-isolated galaxies, depending on parameters such as halo radius, B-band luminosity, and stellar mass. Additionally, the covering fraction of Mgii absorbing gas was found to be related to the distance, with isolated galaxies showing high covering fraction at closer distances. Furthermore, the study highlighted the sensitivity of Mgii gas incidence to both stellar mass and specific star formation rate within the gaseous radius.

Pair lines of sight observations of multiphase gas bearing OVI in a galaxy environment

Pratyush Anshul et al.

Summary: This study presents the physical properties, chemical abundances, and transverse sizes of a multiphase medium in a galaxy field at z = 0.399 using HST/COS spectra of the twin quasar lines of sight Q 0107-025A & Q 0107-025B. The absorber towards Q 0107-025B is a partial Lyman limit system (pLLS) while the absorber along the other sightline has a lower HI column density. OVI and broad HI coinciding in both sightlines are best explained through collisional ionization in a cooling plasma with solar metallicity.

CGM2 I: The Extent of the Circumgalactic Medium Traced by Neutral Hydrogen

Matthew C. Wilde et al.

Summary: This study presents initial findings from the COS and CGMCGM (or CGM(2)) survey on the circumgalactic medium (CGM) surrounding galaxies. The research reveals that the characteristic size of the CGM varies for galaxies of different mass ranges, with lower mass galaxies having smaller CGM radii and higher mass galaxies having larger CGM radii. The use of Rvir as a proxy for the CGM's characteristic radius is suggested to underestimate its overall extent.

The evolution of the low-density H I intergalactic medium from z=3.6 to 0: data, transmitted flux, and H I column density

T-s Kim et al.

Summary: A new uniform analysis of the H I transmitted flux and column density distribution in the low-density IGM as a function of redshift was presented. The study confirmed previous conclusions and revealed evolution in flux and column density distribution with decreasing redshift, as well as variations in sightlines. High-NH absorbers were found to evolve more rapidly than low-N(H I ) absorbers, decreasing in number or cross-section over time.
