Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

The Role of Porphyrinoid Photosensitizers for Skin Wound Healing

Mariana C. S. Vallejo et al.

Summary: Microorganisms in skin wounds can cause infections, but photodynamic therapy using porphyrinoids as photosensitizers can effectively eradicate them and promote wound healing. Porphyrinoids have the ability to generate reactive oxygen species, which not only prevent infections but also promote cell proliferation and regulate inflammation factors.

Platinum Complexes in Colorectal Cancer and Other Solid Tumors

Beate Koeberle et al.

Summary: Cisplatin is effective in treating various solid tumors, but not in colorectal cancer due to alterations in DNA damage signaling and repair mechanisms. Improvement in cisplatin-based chemotherapy for colorectal cancer may be achieved through newly designed analogues and biochemical modulators. Overcoming resistance in cancers can involve targeting DNA damage signaling pathways and utilizing improved platinum compounds.

Optical - Magnetic probe for evaluating cancer therapy

Huiyi Liu et al.

Summary: The rapid progress of functional nanomaterials has led to the development of non-invasive and high efficient methods for cancer diagnosis and therapy. However, individual patient variation can cause different responses even to standard cancer treatment. Optical imaging and magnetic imaging are capable of accurately evaluating tumor microenvironment changes or therapeutic responses with fewer side effects, enabling personalized treatment and real-time quantification of therapy progress and effectiveness. This review focuses on the current applications of optical and magnetic imaging probes for evaluating cancer therapy and discusses future developments and challenges for real-world application.

Photodynamic therapy for hypoxic tumors: Advances and perspectives

Li Huang et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a preferred clinical technology for treating tumors, but the hypoxic tumor microenvironment weakens its efficiency. Strategies for improving PDT efficacy in hypoxic tumors include increasing oxygen concentration, disregarding hypoxia, and exploiting hypoxia. Combining PDT with other therapeutics can also enhance treatment outcomes.
