Identification of Mushroom and Murine Tyrosinase Inhibitors from Achillea biebersteinii Afan. Extract

Marcelina Strzepek-Gomolka et al.

Summary: This study aimed to optimize the extraction procedure of Achillea biebersteinii, evaluate its phytochemical composition, and compare the anti-tyrosinase potential of extracts obtained by various methods. The most active anti-tyrosinase extract was fractionated and the compounds responsible for the inhibitory activity were identified. Compounds like caffeoylquinic acid derivatives and dicaffeoylquinic acid derivatives were found to be more likely responsible for the tyrosinase inhibitory activity.

Phytochemical Characterization and Screening of Antioxidant, Antimicrobial and Antiproliferative Properties of Allium x cornutum Clementi and Two Varieties of Allium cepa L. Peel Extracts

Zeljana Fredotovic et al.

Summary: Onion waste products are rich in antioxidants and have antimicrobial and antiproliferative properties, with quercetin 3,4'-diglucoside and quercetin 4'-monoglucoside being the main flavonols. The composition of anthocyanins varies among extracts, and antioxidant assays showed that A. x cornutum had the highest antioxidant power. Additionally, antimicrobial tests revealed that A. x cornutum had greater antimicrobial activity compared to other onion varieties.

Determination of antioxidant capacity and flavonoid composition of onion (Allium cepa L.) landrace 'Krishnapuram' bulb using HPLC-ESI-ITMS

G. Vijayalakshmi et al.

Summary: This study reveals the antioxidant activity and flavonoid composition of KP onion landrace for the first time, indicating its potential for future breeding programs and geographical indication (GI) tag. The analysis using HPLC-ESI-ITMS showed the presence of various flavonols and anthocyanins in KP onion, with quercetin glucosides identified as the major contributor to its antioxidant activity. These findings highlight the importance of quercetin glycosides in differentiating red onions and their potential for use in breeding programs.
