Acrylic acid plasma polymerization and post-plasma ethylene diamine grafting for enhanced bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell behaviour on polycaprolactone nanofibers

Mahtab Asadian et al.

Summary: The surface of PCL nanofibers was successfully modified by acrylic acid plasma polymerization and post-plasma grafting of ethylene diamine, resulting in improved wettability and reduced surface charge. These modifications enhanced the adhesion and proliferation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, indicating that minor changes in surface chemistry can have a significant impact on cell-biomaterial interactions.

Permeation-resistant and flexible plasma-polymerised films on 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate hydrogels

Bishakh Rout et al.

Summary: This study highlights the deposition of plasma polymer films on hydrogels as effective permeation barriers for aqueous species, with at least 75% reduction in permeation of a dye molecule observed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed the introduction of O- and N-rich chemical functionalities on the surface of the hydrogel after plasma polymerization. Scanning electron microscope imaging showed that milder plasma conditions result in uniform films resistant to water and mechanical stress.

Antimicrobial Peptides Grafted onto a Plasma Polymer Interlayer Platform: Performance upon Extended Bacterial Challenge

Stefani S. Griesser et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of antimicrobial coatings comprising AMPs LL37, Magainin 2, and Parasin 1 grafted onto a plasma polymer platform. The coatings showed significant reductions in bacterial colonization and were found to be non-toxic to primary fibroblasts. Further research is needed to explore potential consequences arising from the presence of dead bacteria and compare them to non-fouling coatings.

A Review of Plasma Synthesis Methods for Polymer Films and Nanoparticles under Atmospheric Pressure Conditions

Hyo Jun Jang et al.

Summary: The paper provides an overview of recent approaches in gas/aerosol-through-plasma and liquid plasma methods for synthesizing polymer films and nanoparticles using atmospheric-pressure plasma. Over 50 recent papers on various APP polymerization methods are introduced and compiled, allowing for a discussion on the challenges and future direction of GATP and solution plasma methods for large-area and mass nanoparticle production under ambient air conditions.

Atmospheric Pressure Dielectric Barrier Discharges for the Deposition of Organic Plasma Polymer Coatings for Biomedical Application

Jumal Ibrahim et al.

Summary: Atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) show great potential in bioengineering and medical fields for functionalisation of biomaterials. The ability to operate continuously in open atmosphere makes DBD a preferred method over conventional surface engineering techniques, utilizing a dielectric layer between conducting electrodes in the discharge path.
