Qiangliang Yu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that halogen-free dicationic ionic liquids exhibit excellent friction-reducing and anti-wear properties, especially at high temperatures. Analysis of worn surfaces reveals that the effectiveness of ILs is attributed to the formation of high quality tribofilms consisting of both tribochemical reaction and ordered absorption films.

Dissolution pretreatment of cellulose by using levulinic acid-based protic ionic liquids towards enhanced enzymatic hydrolysis

Feng He et al.

Summary: Economically competitive and sustainable levulinic acid-based protic ionic liquids were found to be effective solvents for the dissolution pretreatment of cellulose, enhancing enzymatic hydrolysis. The best performing solvent system, derived from DBN, achieved 94% glucose yield at 100 degrees C for 1 hour. This system was also suitable for lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment with corn stover, although requiring higher temperature and longer pretreatment time. Additionally, the solvent system could be recycled and reused.

Synthesis, thermal behavior and kinetic study of N-morpholinium dicationic ionic liquids by thermogravimetry

Claudio Ferdeghini et al.

Summary: Six N-morpholinium dicationic ionic liquids with different linker lengths were synthesized and their thermal stability was assessed. It was found that NTf2 DILs are more stable than bromide DILs, and the decomposition time at a given conversion degree at 250 degrees C was used as an alternative stability parameter. The decomposition mechanism of the shortest member in the bromide series was investigated using DFT, revealing a double retro-S(N)2 pathway as the reasonable two-step mechanism.

Thermal Stability of Ionic Liquids: Current Status and Prospects for Future Development

Chenqian Xu et al.

Summary: Ionic liquids are considered the safest solvents in high-temperature applications due to their non-flammable properties, with thermogravimetric analysis being extensively used for studying their thermal stability. Isoconversional methods are found to be superior to Arrhenius methods in calculating activation energy, and the use of compensation effect and master plots is suggested for pre-exponential factor calculation. The structure of cations has some influence on thermal stability, but anions play a larger role. Developing dicationic ILs can lead to enhanced thermal stability.

Thermal stability and decomposition mechanism of dicationic imidazolium-based ionic liquids with carboxylate anions

Jean C. B. Vieira et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal stability and decomposition mechanisms of dicationic ionic liquids through experimental and kinetic analysis. The results show that [Bis(C4MIM)][C6COO](2) is the most stable among the DILs, and an increase in the cation's spacer chain leads to a decrease in stability. Additionally, multiple reactions were found to occur during the decomposition process.

Efficient synthesis of isosorbide-based polycarbonate with scalable dicationic ionic liquid catalysts by balancing the reactivity of the endo-OH and exo-OH

Weiwei Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of high-activity imidazole-based dicationic ionic liquids were designed and synthesized as efficient catalysts for synthesizing high molecular weight poly(isosorbide carbonate). The catalytic activity of DILs was attributed to strong electrostatic interactions and effective balance of reactivity. The thermal performance of the product was optimized by regulating the chain configuration, leading to improved thermal properties through reduction of hydroxyl groups and increase of specific structures in the repeating unit. Additionally, H-1 NMR, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations verified the reaction mechanism involving anion and cation multi-site synergistic effects.
