Chemopreventive effects of anthocyanins on colorectal and breast cancer: A review

David Bars-Cortina et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the current state of diet anthocyanin research in breast cancer and colorectal cancer animal models as well as human studies. Animal studies suggest a chemoprevention effect of anthocyanin, but results from human studies are contradictory. Low doses of anthocyanins used in recent human studies call for more toxicological data to support relevant results.

The role of anthocyanins as antidiabetic agents: from molecular mechanisms to in vivo and human studies

Francisco Les et al.

Summary: Research has shown that polyphenols, particularly anthocyanins, found in plant foods play a key role in combating oxidative stress and aging. Specifically, anthocyanins have been shown to have potential in inhibiting enzymes and affecting gene expression and metabolic pathways related to glucose, thereby modulating diabetes and associated disorders. Human intervention studies have also suggested that high doses of anthocyanins can be beneficial in preventing or treating type 2 diabetes, but further standardized research is needed to draw general conclusions and claim benefits for the broader population.

Anthocyanins attenuate vascular and inflammatory responses to a high fat high energy meal challenge in overweight older adults: A cross-over, randomized, double-blind clinical trial

Vinicius A. do Rosario et al.

Summary: Anthocyanins from fruits may help attenuate the potential negative effects of a high fat high energy meal on vascular and microvascular function, as well as inflammatory biomarkers in overweight older adults. Further research is needed to better understand the clinical implications of postprandial cardiovascular disease biomarkers.

Dark Sweet Cherry (Prunus avium) Phenolics Enriched in Anthocyanins Induced Apoptosis in MDA-MB-453 Breast Cancer Cells through MAPK-Dependent Signaling and Reduced Invasion via Akt and PLCγ-1 Downregulation

Marjorie Anne A. Layosa et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that dark sweet cherry phenolics inhibit the growth and invasion of MDA-MB-453 breast cancer cells by targeting cell signaling pathways that induce apoptosis and suppress cell invasion, with anthocyanins showing enhanced chemopreventive activities.

Food anthocyanins decrease concentrations of TNF-α in older adults with mild cognitive impairment: A randomized, controlled, double blind clinical trial

Vinicius A. do Rosario et al.

Summary: This study found that daily consumption of high dose fruit-based anthocyanins reduced TNF-alpha concentrations in older adults with MCI, but did not alter other inflammatory biomarkers, microvascular function, or blood pressure parameters. Further research with a larger sample size and longer follow-up is needed to determine the impact on CVD risk and cognitive decline progression.

Role of Oxidative Stress in the Pathogenesis of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: Implications for Prevention and Therapy

Johanna C. Arroyave-Ospina et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress plays a major role in the pathophysiology of chronic liver diseases, particularly in non-alcoholic liver disease (NAFLD). The antioxidant response, regulated by the Nrf2/ARE pathway, is crucial in combating oxidative stress-induced damage.

Potential of anthocyanin as an anti-inflammatory agent: a human clinical trial on type 2 diabetic, diabetic at-risk and healthy adults

Summary: The study found a significant decrease in pro-inflammatory biomarkers in the T2D group, as well as improvements in some biochemical parameters in the T2D-at-risk group. There was also a significant difference in DII scores between the healthy and T2D groups, with the T2D group's score indicative of an anti-inflammatory diet.

Summary: The study indicated that Cy-3-g could effectively inhibit PAH in rats induced by MCT, as well as suppress inflammation, block oxidative stress, improve vascular endothelial injury, and reduce SMC proliferation. Cy-3-g also blocked the expression of TGF-beta 1/p38 MAPK/CREB axis, suggesting its potential in preventing vascular remodeling in PAH.
