Re-discovery and novel contributions to morphology and multigene phylogeny of Myxophyllum steenstrupi (Ciliophora: Pleuronematida), an obligate symbiont of terrestrial pulmonates

Tengyue Zhang et al.

Summary: The symbiotic ciliate Myxophyllum steenstrupi, living in terrestrial pulmonates, was rediscovered and characterized using an integrative morpho-molecular approach after nearly 30 years. It was classified in the free-living order Pleuronematida based on phylogenetic analyses. Various ciliate lineages independently became commensals or parasites of different aquatic and terrestrial molluscs.

Multi-gene phylogeny of the subclass Astomatia (Protista: Ciliophora) refreshed with two rare astome ciliates from the digestive tube of endogeic earthworms

Tomas Obert et al.

Summary: By analyzing the systematic position of astomes from the family Radiophryidae, new species and evolutionary relationships were discovered, challenging traditional classifications. Genetic data revealed a complex evolutionary history and adaptive diversification within the astome group.

Morphology, morphogenesis and phylogeny of Anteglaucoma orientalis n. sp. (Ciliophora, Oligohymenophorea), a freshwater hymenostomatid from northeastern China

Shuixian Zhang et al.

Summary: Anteglaucoma orientalis n. sp., a new hymenostomatid ciliate isolated from a freshwater pond in Harbin, northeastern China, has a unique morphology with specific characteristics in its buccal area and somatic kineties. Its morphogenesis has been revealed for the first time, showing interesting patterns in binary fission. Phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rRNA gene sequences confirm its close relationship with the type species, A. harbinensis Pan et al., 2017.

A discovery of two new Tetrahymena species parasitizing slugs and mussels: morphology and multi-gene phylogeny of T. foissneri sp. n. and T. unionis sp. n.

Tengyue Zhang et al.

Summary: The study in Slovakia examined the presence of parasitic ciliates of the hymenostome genus Tetrahymena in 150 mollusks, revealing new taxa. It suggests that both aquatic and terrestrial mollusks can be interesting hosts for the discovery of novel Tetrahymena lineages.

Large-scale phylogenomic analysis provides new insights into the phylogeny of the class Oligohymenophorea (Protista, Ciliophora) with establishment of a new subclass Urocentria nov. subcl

Chundi Wang et al.

Summary: This study sequenced the genomes and/or transcriptomes of six non-culturable oligohymenophoreans using single-cell sequencing techniques. Phylogenomic analysis with expanded taxon sampling of 85 taxa revealed the evolutionary relationships within Oligohymenophorea and proposed new classifications for Urocentrids and Paranassula. The study also provided insights into the early divergence of Peritrichia and the evolutionary usage of stop codons among oligohymenophoreans.

Cryptic host-driven speciation of mobilid ciliates epibiotic on freshwater planarians

Matej Rataj et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Mobilids show five distinct evolutionary lineages/species at the molecular level. Different Mobilids are highly correlated with their planarian hosts, suggesting that host organisms may provide isolated niches that facilitate speciation of their epibiotic ciliates.

Diversity and Eco-Evolutionary Associations of Endosymbiotic Astome Ciliates With Their Lumbricid Earthworm Hosts

Tomas Obert et al.

Summary: The study explores the diversity of astome ciliates inhabiting the digestive tract of lumbricid earthworms in Central Europe using nuclear and mitochondrial markers, shedding light on their coevolution with hosts and host specificity. The findings suggest that almost every host switch leads to speciation and firm association with the new host.
