Iron and inflammation: in vivo and post-mortem studies in Parkinson's disease

Antonio Martin-Bastida et al.

Summary: The studies investigated the association between iron and inflammation in early-stage Parkinson's disease patients, showing significant correlations between plasmatic ferritin concentrations and proinflammatory cytokines, as well as with clinical measures. Post-mortem material also revealed a link between microgliosis and iron accumulation in different stages of PD progression.
