Balancing selection versus allele and supertype turnover in MHC class II genes in guppies

Magdalena Herdegen-Radwan et al.

Summary: The study analyzed MHC class II and microsatellite diversity in 16 guppy populations from Trinidad and Tobago, showing high within-population MHC diversity with limited allele sharing both within and between islands. Phylogenetic analyses suggested island-specific allelic lineages, and the generation of new alleles at a detectably high frequency. Balancing selection was proposed as the general process behind spatial variation in MHC allele frequencies in this system, consistent with Red Queen processes of host-parasite coevolution.

Depletion of MHC supertype during domestication can compromise immunocompetence

Willow Smallbone et al.

Summary: The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) plays a crucial role in infectious disease resistance, with certain MHC alleles and supertypes associated with resistance to specific parasite species. Depletion of MHC diversity in farmed and domesticated fish leads to increased susceptibility to infections, where supertype delineation captures some, but not all, of the immune function variation among alleles.

Does genetic diversity protect host populations from parasites? A meta-analysis across natural and agricultural systems

Amanda Kyle Gibson et al.

Summary: The study found that genetic diversity can significantly reduce parasitism in experimental host populations, with about a 20% reduction for noncrop hosts and nearly 50% reduction for crop hosts. However, observations of natural host populations showed inconsistent relationships between genetic diversity and parasitism, with both negative and positive correlations reported.
