Hybridization History and Repetitive Element Content in the Genome of a Homoploid Hybrid, Yucca gloriosa (Asparagaceae)

Karolina Heyduk et al.

Summary: Hybridization in plants can lead to significant perturbations in phenotypic and genotypic traits, affecting the physiology, ecology, and fitness of the hybrid species. The maintenance of genomic integrity after hybridization is complicated by changes in ploidy, but homoploid hybrid species provide a unique opportunity to study the genomic consequences of hybridization without changes in chromosome number. Yucca gloriosa, a young homoploid hybrid species resulting from a cross between Yucca aloifolia and Yucca filamentosa, shows evidence of multiple hybridization events involving both parental species as maternal donors. Transposon abundance and expression patterns vary between the three species, with the hybrid frequently exhibiting intermediate traits compared to the parental species.

Transposable Element Mobilization in Interspecific Yeast Hybrids

Caiti Smukowski Heil et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether hybridization can increase the transposition rate and facilitate colonization of TEs in interspecific yeast hybrids. The results suggest that hybridization may facilitate the introduction of TEs across species boundaries and alter transposition via mitochondrial transmission, but this does not lead to unrestrained proliferation of TEs as suggested by the genomic shock theory.

Genomic Evidence of an Ancient East Asian Divergence Event inWild Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Devin P. Bendixsen et al.

Summary: Comparative genome analyses suggest East Asia as the cradle of domesticated Brewer's yeast and new genomic resources from wild yeast strains in China and Taiwan provide insights into the natural diversity of S. cerevisiae and its origin. The wild East Asian strains display elevated levels of structural variations, indicating early divergence from other S. cerevisiae strains. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the genetic variation in this heavily domesticated microbe.
