Vitamin D Status Is Associated With In-Hospital Mortality and Mechanical Ventilation: A Cohort of COVID-19 Hospitalized Patients

Summary: A study found an inverse association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and in-hospital mortality and the need for invasive mechanical ventilation in patients admitted with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19. Further observational studies are needed to confirm these findings, and randomized clinical trials should be conducted to assess the role of vitamin D administration in improving the morbidity and mortality of COVID-19.

Metformin Use Is Associated With Reduced Mortality in a Diverse Population With COVID-19 and Diabetes

Summary: The study found that Black/African-Americans, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes were associated with higher likelihood of contracting COVID-19. Diabetes was also linked to a dramatic increase in COVID-19-related mortality, but the use of metformin showed a significant reduction in mortality for diabetic individuals with COVID-19.
