The role of binding energies for phosphorus and sulphur at grain boundaries in copper

Rolf Sandstrom et al.

Summary: Recent studies using density functional theory have revealed strong variations in segregation energies of phosphorus and sulfur atoms at different atomic sites near copper grain boundaries. The release of free energy during cavity formation is lower for copper with phosphorus compared to phosphorus-free copper, indicating a higher likelihood of cavity generation in the latter material. This suggests that creep cavitation in copper with phosphorus does not result in brittle creep rupture and maintains satisfactory creep ductility.

Effects of nanostructural hierarchy on the hardness and thermal stability of an austenitic stainless steel

Wei Jiang et al.

Summary: By high-pressure torsion processing, an austenitic stainless steel forms a hierarchical nanostructure with double the hardness value compared to the coarse-grained counterpart, which can be maintained at temperatures up to 600 degrees Celsius. Annealing treatment at temperatures from 400 to 600 degrees Celsius can induce recovery of the hierarchical nanostructure, reducing microstructural heterogeneity and increasing hardness.
