Effects of SMAT at cryogenic and room temperatures on the kink band and martensite formations with associated fatigue resistance in a β-metastable titanium alloy

Pierre Maurel et al.

Summary: SMAT treatment at cryogenic temperature can improve the fatigue resistance of 5553 beta-metastable Ti alloy by generating compressive residual stresses, reducing roughness, deepening martensite formation, and increasing the size of kink bands. Conversely, SMAT treatment at room temperature does not provide any improvement in fatigue performance, possibly due to the appearance of subsurface crystallographic defects caused by the larger grain size.

Mechanical (compressive) form of driving force triggers the phase transformation from β to ω & α phases in metastable β phase-field Ti-5553 alloy

Tayyeb Ali et al.

Summary: The study investigates the deformation mechanisms and phase transformations of Ti-5553 alloy under quasi-static and dynamic compression loading. It is found that dislocation slip and twinning are the dominating deformation modes, with grain boundary sliding and spalling more pronounced in quasi-static compression. Stress-induced phase transformations, such as beta to alpha'' and beta to omega, were observed in grains saturated with dislocation slips.

Development of low-cost titanium alloys: A chronicle of challenges and opportunities

Michael O. Bodunrin et al.

Summary: Titanium alloy production became commercialized in the 1950s, 145 years after the discovery of titanium ores ilmenite and rutile. In the 21st century, there is a growing interest in designing new titanium alloys to meet the global demand for stronger, lighter, and less expensive alloys for engineering applications. Despite the existence of up to 100 different grades of titanium alloys, only 20% are currently in commercial use.
