Microplastics on the sea surface of the semi-closed Tokyo Bay

Haruka Nakano et al.

Summary: Microplastics pollution surveys in Tokyo Bay revealed that polyethylene fragments dominated the retrieved microplastics, rivers were considered as the main source of microplastics, and residual currents aggregated microplastics in a convergence zone.

Mesh selectivity of neuston nets for microplastics

Tadashi Tokai et al.

Summary: The study found that the 0.333 mm net had a better retention effect on microplastics smaller than 2.00 mm compared to the 1.00 mm net. The 0.333 mm net is able to retain larger microplastics when selecting for microplastics, but has a poor retention effect on microplastics smaller than 0.4 mm.

Microplastics and microfibers in surface waters of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, California

Lauren M. Kashiwabara et al.

Summary: A study found high concentrations of microplastics and microfibers in surface waters of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, with the highest concentrations near shore and the lowest above the remote Davidson Seamount. The particles in the samples were primarily buoyant synthetic polymers.

The distribution of microplastics in the surface layer of the Atlantic Ocean from the subtropics to the equator according to visual analysis

Ksenia Silvestrova et al.

Summary: This study investigated plastic contamination levels in the Atlantic Ocean between 35 degrees N and 32 degrees S during a specific cruise, finding that almost every subsurface sample contained potential plastic particles, with plastic fragments more common in surface samples and fibers predominant in subsurface samples. The study also revealed that minimal plastic concentrations tend to be found near the equator and to the north of the Canary Islands, while the highest microplastic concentrations were observed in tropical zones. The results obtained were consistent with previous models and field studies.
