A Self-Thickening and Self-Strengthening Strategy for 3D Printing High-Strength and Antiswelling Supramolecular Polymer Hydrogels as Meniscus Substitutes

Ziyang Xu et al.

Summary: By utilizing a concentration-dependent H-bonding-strengthened mechanism, a self-thickening and self-strengthening strategy is proposed to directly 3D print latently H-bonding-reinforced hydrogels by loading concentrated NAGA monomer into low-strength PNAGA hydrogels. This method generates high-strength and antiswelling hydrogels, overcoming the trade-off between strength and printability.

Strong tough hydrogels via the synergy of freeze-casting and salting out

Mutian Hua et al.

Summary: A strategy combining freeze-casting and salting-out treatments produces poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels with a multi-length-scale hierarchical architecture, including micrometre-scale honeycomb-like pore walls and interconnected nanofibril meshes. These hydrogels have properties that compare favorably to other tough hydrogels and even natural tendons.

Reconstructable Gradient Structures and Reprogrammable 3D Deformations of Hydrogels with Coumarin Units as the Photolabile Crosslinks

Chao Nan Zhu et al.

Summary: A hydrogel with reversible photo-crosslinks has been developed, allowing for the reprogramming of gradient structures and 3D deformations into various configurations. The hydrogel is fabricated by micellar polymerization of hydrophobic coumarin monomer and hydrophilic acrylic acid, with hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride micelles enhancing local concentration of coumarin units and improving mechanical properties by forming polyelectrolyte/surfactant complexes. High-efficiency photodimerization and photocleavage reactions of coumarins enable reversible tuning of the network structure of the hydrogel, which can be patterned with different gradient structures through photolithography for versatile functionalities.

Glass Transitions in Hydrated Polyelectrolyte Complexes

Yuhui Chen et al.

Summary: The spontaneous association of oppositely charged natural or synthetic polyelectrolytes in solution has led to the formation of polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) with a wide range of properties and morphologies, including glassy phases. The glass transition temperature, T-g, of PECs was found to be weakly correlated with the water volume fraction, phi(H2O,PEC), but strongly correlated with the fractional free volume as estimated by time-temperature superposition of linear viscoelastic responses.

Hydrogen-Bond Association-Mediated Dynamics and Viscoelastic Properties of Tough Supramolecular Hydrogels

Cong Du et al.

Summary: The study introduces a series of poly(acrylamide-co-methacrylic acid) hydrogels with moderate water contents and excellent mechanical properties, synthesized by free-radical copolymerization. The mechanical properties of the hydrogels vary with the feeding molar fraction of acrylamide. Gels with a molar fraction of 0.2-0.35 exhibit high toughness and stability in water due to dense hydrogen bonds and high segment rigidity.

Molecular mechanism of abnormally large nonsoftening deformation in a tough hydrogel

Ya Nan Ye et al.

Summary: This study investigates the molecular mechanism of abnormally large nonsoftening, quasi-linear but inelastic deformation in tough hydrogels made of hyperconnective physical network and linear polymers as molecular glues. The interplay between the hyperconnectivity of the network and effective load transfer by molecular glues prevents stress concentration, allowing the gels to exhibit unique large nonsoftening, quasi-linear but inelastic deformation characteristics.
