Protein Adsorption Enhances Energy Dissipation in Networks of Lysozyme Amyloid Fibrils

Maurice C. E. van Dalen et al.

Summary: The viscoelastic response of amyloid fibril networks of lysozyme protein in biologically relevant solutions differs significantly from their response in simple buffers, with enhanced energy dissipation observed in cell culture medium and synovial fluid. This energy dissipation is attributed to interactions of amyloid fibrils with other molecules in these solutions, particularly the adsorption of serum albumin protein. This finding provides a basis for a better understanding of the performance of amyloid hydrogels in biomedical applications.
