Assessment of the effects of soil organic matter and iron oxides on the individual sorption of two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Summary: This study assessed the effects of soil organic matter (OM) and iron oxides (IOs) on the sorption of pyrene and fluorene in soils, finding that whole soils had higher sorption capacity, with OM contributing significantly more than IOs. The main soil constituents influenced the desorption of PAHs, with soils rich in OM exhibiting lower desorption and high hysteresis. The presence of soil IOs masked some PAHs sorption sites and removal of these constituents generally reduced sorption and enhanced desorption.
