Implicit function theorem and Jacobians in solvation and adsorption

Seishi Shimizu et al.

Summary: The use of Jacobians in chemical thermodynamics is extended to incorporate implicit functions, simplifying the theories of preferential solvation and adsorption by considering slight deviations from equilibrium governed by the Gibbs-Duhem equations. The generalization to multiple component solutions is straightforward with the implicit function theorem and Jacobians.

Cooperative Sorption on Porous Materials

Seishi Shimizu et al.

Summary: This paper explores the relationship between sorption isotherms and molecular interactions, proposing a cooperative sorption isotherm model and deriving it through statistical thermodynamic methods. The model eliminates assumptions on adsorption sites, layers, and pore geometry, instead explaining the adsorption mechanism based on the statistical characteristics of sorbates.

Sorption: A Statistical Thermodynamic Fluctuation Theory

Seishi Shimizu et al.

Summary: By using statistical thermodynamic fluctuation theory, the sorption mechanism can be elucidated directly from an experimental isotherm without the need of using an isotherm model. The key to understanding the sorption mechanism lies in how sorbate-sorbate interaction depends on activity, without assuming adsorption sites and planar layers.

Adsorbate-adsorbate interactions on microporous materials

Seishi Shimizu et al.

Summary: In this study, semi-empirical isotherm model data was mined to uncover the reality of adsorbate-adsorbate molecular interactions, successfully capturing the primary micropore filling mechanism and subsequent layer adsorption, leading to liquid-like behavior. The microscopic meanings of the DR and DA parameters and the adsorption potential were clarified using statistical thermodynamics.
