A review of the structure and dynamics of araucaria mixed forests in southern Brazil and northern Argentina

Alexandre F. Souza

Summary: The Araucaria Mixed Forests are subtropical forests dominated by Araucaria conifers in Brazil and Argentina, with a diversity of angiosperms. The distribution is associated with lower temperature, frost-prone, and wetter climates. The forest dynamics are influenced by a mix of natural disturbances and human activities.

Phylogenetic regionalization of tree assemblages reveals novel patterns of evolutionary affinities in the Atlantic Forest

Vanessa Leite Rezende et al.

Summary: Using a phylogenetic approach, the study divided woody plant assemblages in the Atlantic Forest into seven principal evolutionary lineage groups. The most significant turnover in lineage composition was observed between tropical evergreen rain forests and subtropical/highland assemblages, with the mixed subtropical forests showing the lowest compositional similarity values. The tropical rain forest exhibited the highest number of indicator lineages and indicator statistic values.

Lianas have more acquisitive traits than trees in a dry but not in a wet forest

Jose A. Medina-Vega et al.

Summary: In dry tropical forests, lianas have a more acquisitive strategy than trees, with more productive leaves and more efficient display for light interception. However, in wet tropical forests, lianas and trees overlap in leaf and stem characteristics, with lianas not being more acquisitive than trees. This suggests that variation in resource acquisition strategies between lianas and trees may be constrained in wet environments with low light availability and nutrient-poor soils.
