Paper-based optoelectronic nose for identification of indoor air pollution caused by 3D printing thermoplastic filaments

Naira Dias Pinheiro et al.

Summary: This study introduces a paper-based optoelectronic nose for identifying the gas emission fingerprint of different thermoplastic filaments to monitor potential hazardous emissions from 3D printers. By utilizing 15 dyes with different chemical properties, successful discrimination of all filaments and non-polluted air was achieved with good reproducibility.

Characterization of Ultrafine Particles and VOCs Emitted from a 3D Printer

Sarka Bernatikova et al.

Summary: Widely available 3D printers emit UFPs and VOCs during printing. PETG and NGEN filaments produced higher particle concentrations, along with detected VOCs such as ethylbenzene, toluene, and xylene. Conducting additional measurements to accurately assess personal exposure to these emissions is crucial, especially for potential long-term health risks.

Three-Dimensional (3D) Printing: Implications for Risk Assessment and Management in Occupational Settings

Veruscka Leso et al.

Summary: The widespread use of 3D printing technologies in industrial and home-business sectors has raised concerns about potential health implications of 3D printing emissions. Limited studies suggest that particles released during 3D printing could potentially affect the respiratory system of workers, highlighting the importance of further research on exposure risks and health effects.
