An in vitro 3D diabetic human skin model from diabetic primary cells

Candan Yilmaz Ozdogan et al.

Summary: A thick and pre-vascularized in vitro 3D type 2 diabetic human skin model was developed for evaluating the effects of anti-diabetic drugs and wound healing materials and factors, showing sensitivity and predictability in evaluating the diabetic wound healing potential of therapeutic materials.

Toward Developing Immunocompetent Diabetic Foot Ulcer-on-a-Chip Models for Drug Testing

Mirella Ejiugwo et al.

Summary: Bioengineering of skin has been explored extensively, with a focus on developing physiologically relevant immunocompetent diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) models. Current preclinical platforms are not robust enough to provide reliable data for clinical trials, leading researchers to propose using organ-on-a-chip (OoC) technology with diseased cells to create DFU models for improved drug testing. The integration of immunocompetent cells, reproducible scaffolds, and microfluidic platforms could lead to more successful wound healing therapeutics.

A Novel Three-Dimensional Skin Disease Model to Assess Macrophage Function in Diabetes

Avi Smith et al.

Summary: This study integrates diabetic-specific macrophages into a three-dimensional model of human skin for the first time, successfully mimicking the inflammatory response of diabetic foot ulcers. The 3D skin disease model can be utilized to study macrophage-related inflammation in diabetes and serve as a drug testing tool for evaluating new treatments for the disease.
