Propagation of large earthquakes as self-healing pulses or mild cracks

Valere Lambert et al.

Summary: Observations suggest that mature faults can experience large earthquakes at much lower stress levels than expected static strength. Numerical modeling shows that quasi-statically strong faults exhibit sharp, self-healing pulse-like ruptures, while persistently weak faults result in milder, crack-like ruptures with more spread-out slip. The findings raise questions about earthquake physics and the underestimated radiated energy from large earthquakes.

Unconventional singularities and energy balance in frictional rupture

Efim A. Brener et al.

Summary: The study developed a macroscopic theory showing that the generic rate-dependent nature of friction leads to deviations from the conventional singularity, resulting in significant non-edge-localized rupture-related dissipation. The breakdown of scale separation in fracture leads to accumulated spatially-extended dissipation involving macroscopic scales.

Theory of unconventional singularities of frictional shear cracks

Efim A. Brener et al.

Summary: Frictional shear cracks exhibit unconventional singularities with a singularity order xi that differs from the conventional -1/2 one, depending on the friction law, propagation speed, and symmetry mode of loading. This challenges the assumption of universal square root near-edge singularity in Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, highlighting the importance of considering the intrinsic dependence of frictional strength on slip rate in understanding frictional phenomena.Explicit calculations are presented for linear viscous-friction, applicable to both in-plane and anti-plane shear loadings.
