Biosilicate® Glass-Ceramic Foams From Refined Alkali Activation and Gel Casting

Enrico Bernardo et al.

Summary: Biosilicate (R) glass-ceramics are a promising alternative to 45S5 Bioglass, offering similar bioactivity and bioresorbability but with superior mechanical strength. A gel-casting process based on room temperature foaming of powders in a weakly alkaline aqueous solution, followed by sintering at 1000 degrees C, was explored for shaping highly porous bodies for bone tissue engineering applications. Amorphous powders showed more intense gelation and promoted homogeneous foaming, leading to substantial crystallization upon firing. Foamed samples were evaluated for homogeneity using micro-tomography and further improved through foam casting before setting.
