Oxidation/corrosion of BN-based coatings as prospective interphases for SiC/SiC composites

Paul Carminati et al.

Summary: The oxidation/corrosion behavior of SiC-based fibres and BN matrices with an interphase coating is crucial in determining the service life of ceramic matrix composites used as structural parts in aircraft engines. The presence of aluminium in the BN coating improves protection at high temperatures by forming alumina combined with borosilicate, whereas thin layers of pure BN exhibit reduced recession due to the formation of a sealing borosilicate phase at lower temperatures.

Improved ablation resistance of 3D-Cf/SiBCN composites with (PyC/SiC)3 multi-layers as interphase

Qi Ding et al.

Summary: The study found that 3D-Cf/SiBCN composites exhibit improved ablation resistance, with the amorphous SiBCN matrix oxidizing to form a borosilicate glass and SiC and Si3N4 grains precipitating and oxidizing to form a protective coating during ablation. The SiC layers in the (PyC/SiC)3 interphase effectively protect carbon fibers from ablation damage.

Electrospinning of pure polymer-derived SiBCN nanofibers with high yield

Qingqing Chen et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the synthesis of nanoscale silicoboron carbonitride (SiBCN) nanofibers using novel polyborosilazane precursor solutions by electrospinning, followed by pyrolysis. The influence of processing procedures on the fibers was investigated, with TGA and FT-IR used to analyze polymer-to-ceramic conversion, and SEM to characterize the final materials. The combination of precursor derived ceramics route and electrospinning process enables the production of SiBCN nanofibers for industrial applications.

3D characterization of the SiC nanoparticle distribution in ZrB2-SiC ceramics with synchrotron X-ray nanoscale computed tomography

Zhao He et al.

Summary: This paper reports on the 3D distribution characterization of nanosized SiC additives in ZrB2-SiC ceramics using synchrotron X-ray nano-CT technology and Morisita indexes. The study reveals the presence of SiC agglomerates in the ZrB2 matrix and variations in different regions of interest within the sample, as confirmed by the Morisita index.

Effects of PyC shell thickness on the microstructure, ablation resistance of SiCnws/PyC-C/C-ZrC-SiC composites

Qinchuan He et al.

Summary: By increasing the PyC shell thickness in SiC nanowires/pyrocarbon core-shell structured composites, the density and thermal conductivity of the composites can be improved while reducing the coefficient of thermal expansion, ultimately enhancing the anti-ablation properties. However, there is an optimal PyC thickness where further increases can lead to an increase in ablation rates.
