Summary: The use of telemedicine has surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a way to deliver clinical care while reducing exposure to the virus. However, as telemedicine becomes more prevalent, it is important to address potential disparities in care, particularly challenges faced by older and impoverished patients in accessing technology and digital literacy. By considering health disparities, telemedicine can be used to address and improve health equity.

Differences in the Use of Telephone and Video Telemedicine Visits During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between patient and neighborhood characteristics and visit modality during the COVID-19 pandemic, finding that 65% of visits were virtual with patients over 65, Black, Hispanic, Spanish-speaking, and from low broadband access areas less likely to use video visits. Practices and clinicians played a larger role in the variation of video visit use than patients.
